Family, housing and well-being in later life
The ageing of many western populations calls for a better understanding of the factors related to well-being in later life. Family and housing are two domains that become increasingly important at older ages. At older ages people generally spend more time in and around the home, and social networks tend to focus on intimate ties, especially close family members. This thesis aims to provide new insights into the interrelationships between family, housing and well-being in later life. Firstly, the impact of family and housing on the housing situation in later life is examined. It is demonstrated that past experiences in the family and housing careers influence the chances of moving out of home ownership in later life. Secondly, cross-national differences in the impact of family and housing on subjective well-being are examined. Family and housing are important determinants of subjective well-being in later life, while the impact varies considerably across Europe. Finally, an investigation of the link between interpersonal relationships and subjective well-being in sheltered housing revealed severable valuable aspects related to housing arrangements such as sheltered housing, where people live independently while having care and assistance available when necessary.
