Deer-parks in Sweden: A historical geographical overview 1600-1800
The aim of this article has been to describe, analyse and discuss the Swedish deerpark (djurgård or djurhage in Swedish) and its development from a historical geographical perspective 1600–1800. The study is an overview and was performed by analysing historical maps regarding size, design, location, purpose and development. The survey located 120 deerparks on large-scale maps belonging to 99 different estates. Another 23 estates had deer-parks but no large-scale maps with the extent of the deer-park were found. The deer-parks were situated in the southern part of Sweden, specifically in the provinces of Skåne, Blekinge, Bohuslän, Småland, Västergötland, Östergötland, Gotland, Södermanland, Närke, Västmanland and Uppland. The deer-parks varied in size from only one hectare up to 2100 hectares, but the normal deer-park was between 10 and 100 hectares (50% were between 10 and 49 hectares and 25% between 50 and 99 hectares. The deer-parks could be situated close to the manorhouse but also further away. The study also demonstrates that the first deer-parks were erected in the 16th century and abandoned already during the 17th century. To conclude – the research material displays complexity and great variation regarding their different aspects and development. The study also shows that the historical maps are only an indication of the situation depicted on the map. In order to fully comprehend the deer-park, additional sources need to be taken into consideration. As a final point, deer-parks have been a part of the landscape at several estates and are thus a part of our cultural history.
