A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
LOOM • ROOM • HARP
All enclosed spaces were once outside and are still pervaded by the shared, existential medium of air. Architectural interiority reflects the pervasive idea of a personal or corporeal interiority, as though we were looking out on the world from inside our bodies. Our 2021 exhibition LOOM • ROOM • HARP used drawing, installation, and performance alongside the primary medium of sound to question this notion of interiority and its consequences at corporeal, architectural, and urban scales in the context of the Anderson Gallery at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.A. This paper presents the history of this site, and how the project invited sound in and out of the space as an unruly force that would conjure memory, participation, and possibility.
