Retrofitting a residential building towards a net-zero energy building
The main objective of this thesis is to project new ideas into the refurbishment market in the building industry by applying integrated innovative solutions to energy-related problems in domestic households in order to achieve a net-zero energy building. And, to discover in which way technology may help this evolving process towards an integrated efficient system between consumers and electricity companies. To get introduced into the field of work, the current state of the art of the sector was evaluated. By analyzing how buildings behaved from the energetic and efficiency points of view, clear results arose concerning the best possible and feasible solutions applicable to this kind of edifications. The project pretended to be a real and practical case, consequently and after a brief explanation about the software tools used and the technical details of the building of the case study, it was carried out an analysis of the diverse possible solutions involving renewable energy installations, thermal and electrical equipment modification and an innovative idea about purchasing the electricity of the building directly from a company that certified that energy came from renewable energy sources. With that comparison, strengths and weaknesses are rated in order to facilitate a final decision. The final result showed that a net-zero energy building can be achieved easily and effectively if each case is analyzed and presented the best customized energy-solutions for an individual building with its own physical and geographical characteristics. Notwithstanding, the economic factor plays a key role in the refurbishment market mechanism, all buildings may hypothetically be able to achieve net-zero energy buildings, but this idea must be excluded because of the constraints imposed by the price of the measures to achieve it. So, to achieve a more efficient and clean energetic system in the building industry a shift in thinking must be done to balance the economic weight those types of investment imply, in order to promote ...
