Corrosion analysis using steel plate girders
This research project considers the design of a simple straight I-girder subject to section loss due to corrosion. Finite element models created using Abaqus/CAE are used to model the corrosion. The design of the steel girder follows the standards of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the several established, “Rules-of- Thumbs” for steel plate girder design. As a simple three-span bride from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration was the basis for the design. The Steel Construction Manual of the American Institute of Steel Construction was used to help do a full structural analysis on the girder. These corrosion stages consider the effects of section loss on the flange, web, and stiffeners, respectively. The project will explore how the bridge’s repose to applied load varies as deterioration of the girder cross-section is increased, and the effects of multiple girders being corroded versus just one girder becoming corroded. Finite element analysis will demonstrate that section loss on the web and on the stiffeners has a more profound effect on the moment carrying capacity and shear stress capacity of the beam.
