The final master thesis examines the lack of spaces suitable for cultural activities in dwelling districts of Vilnius. Two issues are delt with in parallel: the development of city‘s cultural infrastructure and social – cultural interests of local communities. The needs and potentiality of a new cultural building is examined. The aim is to prepare conceptual project for the community centre, which would be linked to a specific urban situation - the residential areas of mass construction. The intention for the project is to be adaptable to any areas characterized with similar problems. The analytical part presents the analysis of recent social and academic initiatives, linked to the problematical cultural situation in dwelling districts, their performance and results. A study of existing cultural busyness and necessary spaces was made, summarized in graphical statistics. Part also includes a description of a community centre in a residential area, describing theoretical characteristics, program guidelines and site selection criteria. The design part includes the conceptual proposals for the creation of a chain of cultural centres, and description of the development, adaptation and operating principles for the proposed community centre conceptual model. A detailed building project is presented on a chosen location in Justiniskes district. In practical terms, this work can be useful as an object of analysis when determining the land use and development priorities in undeveloped areas in existing dwelling districts. Also as conceptual inspiration when developing smaller-scale cultural projects The written part of the work consists of introduction, analytical part, project part, conclusions and suggestions, references. Appendixes: 10 tablets and 2 models are added separately.
