The climate is changing, Finland is urbanizing, and green solutions are getting more important. Green roofs help with all these problems and thus they are getting more popular in Finland. The aim of this thesis is to get a basic understanding of a green roof, its structure, and its advantages and disadvantages. It also brings out examples of green roofs in Finland, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States to help to compare them and the guides each of these countries have. Green roof structures are mostly the same, but companies’ have made their own solutions for local vegetation, growth medium, drainage layer, and waterproofing. The German FLL Green Roof Guideline is the basis for modern green roofs all around the world, but the differences in climate and vegetation create a need for local guides. A Finnish guide on green roofs could make them easier to approach in design and construction. In addition, more research on how green roofs perform in Finland is needed.
