Cities are becoming even more important in the economic development of the countries. More and more people are moving from rural areas into the urban ones. Therefore, the main objective of this paper was to evaluate the impact of cohesion policy on urban development in two Lithuanian cities – Vilnius and Mažeikiai. In this paper there are five different goals that have been analyzed. First goal was to analyze different types of articles and evaluate the importance of cohesion policy to the EU’s economy. Second goal was to analyze various science articles and evaluate if the objectives of the cohesion policy programmes were fully fulfilled and evaluate the urban growth on different programing periods. The third goal was to examine the opinions expressed by different people and given facts by the European Commission in order to analyze how the cohesion policy post 2020 could be changed so it would provide the maximum economic growth for Lithuania and the EU as a whole. The fourth goal was to analyze different types of projects and scientific researches in order to review how Lithuania and its cities assimilate EU funds. The fifth goal was to examine the implemented projects of the EU cohesion policy in Vilnius and Mažeikiai, to conduct a survey and to analyze statistical data in order to compare the benefits of the EU funds in the development of the cities. In the paper working methods such as comparable article analysis and synthesis, deductive reasoning and conduction of a survey were used. After the research a conclusion that the value of the projects implemented in Vilnius was greater than in Mažeikiai and that the programmes were better implemented in the later programming periods have been made. The development of the infrastructure was positive in both cities but the economic development was greater in the Capital of Lithuania.
