Burbiškio parko sodų būklės vertinimas ; Assessment of the condition of the Burbiškis park gardens
The Burbiškis manor was mentioned in the written sources in 1868. The park was established by the landowner M. Baženskis, and new plants were constantly being planted there. The park is situated on 28 ha of land. Its dendroflora consists of about 50 autochthonous species and species introduced from Odessa, Riga, St. Petersburg, Warsaw and other places. 3 gardens (3,29 ha) were planted, and up to 500 fruit trees could grow there. The majority were planted in the beginning of the previous century and the last one, the New Garden, of about 1 ha was planted in 1920-1923. Object of the thesis –Gardens in the Burbiškis park, i.e., the Southern Garden, the Old Garden, and the New Garden. Aim of the thesis –to investigate characteristics of the growth and fruit-bearing of the Burbiškis manor fruit trees. Research methods –experimental study of the Burbiškis park gardens. Results – The largest number of the remaining trees was in the Old Garden and the smallest number of the remaining trees was in the Southern garden. The majority of the preserved apple varieties were “Antonovka” apples. By assessing fruit-bearing of the gardens, it was found out that 9,4% of the apple trees did not bear fruit at all, yield of 8,9 % of the apple trees was very poor, 41,4 % bore fruit averagely, 12,3 % - abundantly, 1,5 % - very abundantly with regard to the trees in all gardens. Examination showed that fruit trees in all gardens were mostly infected with branch rot, to a lesser extent – with trunk rot, fruit rot, diseases caused by aphyllophorales and minimally – with cancer. The majority of the apple trees were of 0,80–1,20 m height, and their trunk volume was 0,9-1,0 m. Almost half of “Antonovka” fruit trees were of 0,70–0,90 m. In all gardens, the largest number of apple trees was in 4-6 main branch groups, which is more than half of the investigated apple trees. With regard to the projection of main branches, condition of the Southern garden apple trees was much better in comparison with the New Garden, where the branches were much shorter. In the New Garden the width of leaves was bigger by 5,6 %, length – 10 %, index – 4,1 in comparison with the Southern Garden. The width of fruit in the New Garden was bigger by 1,6 %, height – 1,4 %, weight - 0,8 % as compared with fruit investigated in the other gardens.
