INTEGRATION OF KEY TECHNOLOGIES INTO A SMART GRID SYSTEM: A CASE STUDY OF GRID-CONNECTED PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) WITH NET-METERING SYSTEM
Despite the fact that fossil fuels are found in a limited number of locations but they are consumed globally. In contrast, renewable energy is available all over the world, but it is only used by a small portion of the world's population. However, due to greater awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels and advancements in renewable energy technologies, there is presently a boom in the usage of renewable energy as an alternate source of energy. Particularly, in Pakistan the use of solar power was widely promoted and implemented on a domestic level in the recent decade. The thesis is mainly to identify an increasing recognition of grid modernization so that new power generation and consumption plans can be produced. This idea is an autonomous network that provides two-way electricity flows and comprehensive information in real time between generation nodes and different electrical appliances and all locations between them. The distributed intelligence, communication technology and automatic control systems are three main components of smart grids. In this thesis different smart grid elements will be discussed, such as power generation sources photovoltaic system, PV, storage system, controllable loads, and smart meters. The aim of this thesis is to provide an in-depth assessment of the smart grid, smart grid technologies, development of electricity storage technologies, and the current situation of the electric vehicles market, charging infrastructure, the impacts of vehicle to grid, and electric vehicles charging are presented. A case study is initiated to focus on grid connected power system with net-metering system. For this reason, the commercial building located in Peshawar is being used to design and develop a PV system based on its monthly load need. It provides a complete approach for the specification of each component of the PV system connected to grid. A complete cost analysis has been carried out which involves the installation of the photovoltaic solar system.
