A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Untersuchungen zum hydraulischen Grundbruch in Baugruben in nichtbindigen Böden
The safety against seepage failure by heave must be checked for an excavation pit constructed in open water or urban area when a groundwater flow takes place from the upstream side into the excavation pit. A seepage failure by heave appears when the pore water pressure developed by groundwater flow lifts the soil on the downstream side. It may lead to the collapse of the excavation walls or to the overall stability loss of the excavation pit.By the present work, a contribution to the more exact clarification of seepage failure by heave in excavation pits constructed in non-cohesive soils should be given. For this purpose, the problem is treated firstly in non-cohesive homogeneous soils. With the help of numerical steady-state groundwater flow analyses, a failure criterion is introduced for three-dimensional flow conditions. Subsequently, a model box is constructed utilizing the symmetry in order to investigate the mechanism of the seepage failure by heave. Only after thorough investigations performed in non-cohesive homogeneous soils, the problem is treated in non-cohesive stratified soils with the help of steady-state groundwater flow analyses and model tests. Finally, the problem of seepage failure by heave is investigated in both homogeneous and stratified soils by means of coupled flow-stress-deformation analyses.
