Perugia in particular. The architectural survey of simple elements in the historic city
The thesis developed aims to offer an analytical and systematic approach dedicated to the historic center of Perugia, interpreted as a complex architectural organism, consisting of the aggregation filtered through the composition of elementary parts. The ideological assumption lies in the possibility of documenting the identity of a homogeneous anthropized territorial context, starting from its anatomical decomposition into simple typological components and its analysis, in an attempt to determine the role they assume in the definition of the figurative character of the urban scene. Although at a semantic level the term centre refers to a concept of immobility of the historical city, its continuous and necessary mutation is undeniable, both as a result of physiological evolutions and as a result of war events or natural disasters. If on the one hand we know how to intervene in the case of monumental buildings, how to behave in the case of the ordinary diffuse heritage? It is from this point of view that, instead of concentrating on emergencies, the research tendentiously investigates the simple elements diffused, acquiring the typical method of the natural sciences where the entities analyzed are organized with respect to the similarity of general characteristics, in order to obtain the construction of a scheme based on a rigid classifying taxonomy. The transposition of the method in architectural terms makes possible a classification based on formal criteria that recognizes a common structure of several objects belonging to the same group. The use of architectural relief and design is configured as necessary at this effect. The information obtained, made homogeneous and systematic thanks to a coherent graphic representation, is collected in dedicated cards and developed from a statistical point of view, with the aim of assessing the recurring characters and combinations, even from a quantitative point of view. The main aim is to offer a unitary methodology (which integrates the tools of architectural survey and design with those of statistical analysis) to allow an interpretative examination of the genetic structure of the city, considering this knowledge necessary for any intervention of conscious transformation.
