Sie arbeiten bevorzugt mit Lehm und lokalen Naturbaustoffen. Dabei beziehen Sie auch die örtliche Bevölkerung in den Entwicklungs- und Bauprozess mit ein. In Ihrer Arbeit als Architektin setzen Sie also eine relativ enge Verbindung zu kulturellen Werten, Material und lokaler Wirtschaft. Das ist richtig. Als 19-Jährige hatte ich das Glück, in Bangladesch bei einer Entwicklungsorganisation mitzuarbeiten. Dort habe ich gelernt, dass die effektivste Strategie für Resilienz ist zu schauen, welche Ressourcen es direkt vor Ort gibt und wie man das Beste daraus entwickeln kann. Das betrifft nicht nur vor Ort verfügbare Materialien wie Lehm, Holz, Bambus oder Stroh, sondern auch die lokalen Energieressourcen. Für mich ist vor allem das Handwerk die wichtigste Energiequelle. Es ist ein urmenschliches Bedürfnis, gebraucht zu werden und einer guten und sinnvollen Arbeit nachzugehen.

In your work as an architect, cultural values, materials, and the local economy are therefore closely entwined. That’s right. As a 19-year-old, I had the luck to work for a development organization in Bangladesh. There I learned that the most effective strategy for resilience is to find out what resources are available on site and how to make the most of them. This concerns not only locally available materials such as clay, wood, bamboo, or straw but also local energy resources. For me, craft is the most important source of energy. It is a basic human need to be needed and to do good and meaningful work. Construction, is meaningful work.
