Die international bislang kaum beachtete Stadt Kaohsiung ist mit 2,7 Millionen Einwohnern nicht nur die größte Hafenstadt Taiwans, sondern auch eine der größten Hafenstädte der Welt. Mit dem im Oktober eröffneten National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts könnte sich ihr Bekanntheitsgrad nun schlagartig steigern. Das Kulturzentrum mit Opernhaus, Theater, Konzert- und Vortragssaal liegt im 65 ha großen, erst 2010 fertig angelegten Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park und bietet insgesamt rund 6000 Zuschauerplätze.
With 2.7 million inhabitants, the little-known city of Kaohsiung is not only the largest port city in Taiwan but also one of the largest in the world. Now the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, open since October, may suddenly increase the city’s name recognition. The cultural centre in the 65-hectare Weiwuying Metropolitan Park seats nearly 6000 people in its opera house, playhouse, concert hall and recital hall.
