Dass Einfamilienhäuser etwas über ihre Bewohner aussagen, ist normal. Doch nur selten leben diese ihre Vorlieben so exzessiv aus wie William Lyttle, der in London als „Mole Man“ – deutsch: Maulwurfsmann – bekannt wurde. Mehr als 40 Jahre lang hatte der Bauingenieur sein geräumiges Haus im Stadtteil Hackney bewohnt und darunter ein verzweigtes Tunnelsystem angelegt. Viele Jahre nach seinem Tod wurde die Künstlerin Sue Webster auf das Haus aufmerksam und hatte es von David Adjaye umbauen lassen. Im Haus des Maulwurfsmanns wollte sie ihre Vision vom Wohnen und Arbeiten unter einem Dach realisieren.
It is quite normal for single-family houses to say something about their occupants. Rarely, however, do the residents reveal their inclinations to such a degree as William Lyttle, a civil engineer who became known as “the Mole Man of Hackney”. For more than 40 years, he lived in his spacious London house and created a ramified network of tunnels beneath it. Many years later, after his death when the artist Sue Webster became interested in the property, she sought to renew her vision of living and working under a single roof in the Mole Man’s house.
