Community Centre in Barcelona
Wood facades are seldom in Spain. Due to fear of fire hazards and scorching heat in summer leading to rapid deterioration, wood is not the first choice in building materials. This is slowly changing. Related discussions on resource saving and sustainable construction are also changing the image of the city. Thus, the municipality shared the risk of building the community centre on the northern edge of Barcelona as a near complete wood structure. The warm tones of the larch siding contrast with the stone-clad surroundings that typically characterise Barcelona. In the interiors, light coloured and warm surfaces made of pine prevail. Only the load bearing elements in part consist of steel, due to the long spans in some spaces.
Holzfassaden sind in Spanien selten. Angst vor Feuer und der sengenden Hitze im Sommer, die zu schnellem Verschleiß führen, bescheren Holz keinen hohen Rang in der Materialskala. Das ändert sich langsam und die Diskussion um ressourcenschonendes, nachhaltiges Bauen verändert das Stadtbild. So trug die Stadtverwaltung das Wagnis mit, das Gemeindezentrum am nördlichen Rand von Barcelona fast komplett aus Holz zu errichten. Dessen warme Farbe der Lärchenschalung sticht aus der steinernen Umgebung, die ganz Barcelona prägt, heraus. Auch in den Innenräumen dominieren die hellen, warmen Oberflächen von Kiefernholz. Nur die tragenden Bauteile sind zum Teil in Stahl ausgeführt, bedingt durch die großen Spannweiten einiger Räume.
