RESUMEN La pertenencia al lugar, la necesidad de significarse como colectividad, han sido una constante de la arquitectura a lo largo de la historia. La demarcación de un recinto, la definición de un interior en contraposición a un exterior, ha seguido estrategias diversas. De las necesidades defensivas se derivan empalizadas, vallados y murallas. Del anhelo simbólico y conmemorativo, los elementos verticales, menhires, obeliscos y torres. Estas metodologías han evolucionado para adaptarse a la escala de la metrópolis contemporánea. La nueva dimensión urbana impide la construcción de un objeto material continuo, que pasa a ser evocado por una sucesión de fragmentos referenciales. Por otra parte, la explosión de la movilidad conlleva el difuminado de los límites del área urbana, encontrando en sus redes de transporte el nuevo aglutinante del colectivo. SUMMARY The relevance to the place, the need to signify itself as a whole, has been anarchitectural constant throughout history. The demarcation of an enclosure, the definition of an interior in contrast to an exterior, has followed diverse strategies. Palisades, stockades and walls were derived from defensive needs; the vertical elements, menhirs, obelisks and towers, from the desire for symbolism and commemoration. These methodologies have evolved to adapt to the scale of the contemporary metropolis. The new urban dimension impedes the construction of a continuous material object, which happens to be evoked by a succession of referential fragments. On the other hand, the explosion of urban mobility entails the blurring of the limits of the urban area, with the new cohesiveness of the group being provided by its transport networks.
