This article presents an analysis of the condominium complex situated in the West zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, established in the realm of the Minha Casa, Minha Vida programme, aimed at the low-income population. The focus is the spaces created by the architectural and urban project confronted by the profile and needs of the inhabitants. The premise of the research is the perception of the housing for the poor as a space with potentialities and difficulties. Regardless of the serious location problems, there are unacceptable difficulties related to project options, including a housing typology that aggravate the segregated and fragmented city, generating a debate on the physic and spatial qualities of housing for the underprivileged population. The expectation is to offer arguments to propose policies for rehabilitation of the developments already executed and increase the chances for the production of a more reasonable popular housing.
