Le développement durable appliqué à la planification rurale: le cas d’une région rurale au Canada
Many rural regions have now become fragile with their integration in the modern agrofood system. This is the case for numerous remote regions of Canada like the Chaudière-Appalaches region in Quebec. Thispaper presents an action-research aim in establishing a rural plan based on a solid territorial diagnostic and well designed strategy of rural development. The diagnostic aprroach as well as the rural development strategy aprroach presented here have their origins in an attempt of apllying the sustainable rural development theory, considered an operating methodology. The problem is how the formation of a new development dynamics, based on public policies and on action strategies that respect the contemporary economic limitations can be assured, but, at the same time, value the agroecological potentialities of those lands and integrate the expectations and wills of the population involved. That is to say that it´s matter of social acceptability of the agricultural practices facing limitations or economic oportunities. Such harmonization among economy, environment and society constitues a necessary condition for the arising of conditions to support the sustainable rural development as we try to demonstrates in this paper.
