A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Industrialization was accompanied by a urbanism of immobility: the workers’ housing estates made it possible in particular for employers to spatially fix a laborforce of rural origin, spatial stability then being an essential condition for the development of industrial capitalism. In parallel, the vagrant, who personified mobility, found himself being set up as the public enemy. During the last thirty years, the crisis of capitalism has meant the appearance of a new regime based on the flexible accumulation of capital; this, on the contrary, requires an extreme mobility of labor. One might therefore see the current transformations of urban landscapes and the multiplication of “spaces of mobility” within French cities as resulting from the increasing influence of the social groups who are emerging with globalization, but also from the changing role of a neoliberal State now promoting the mobility of labor. Finally, the motionless bodies in urban space are now designated as the new public enemies.
