The author begins by setting out some of the underlying conditions which have shaped the current spatial planning situation in Germany. He criticises the fact that discussion on the way forward for spatial planning has taken place largely without sufficient familiarity with the results and successes achieved to date. This is followed by an account of the materialisation of settlement structure norms in the pre-unification Federal Republic of Germany with an appraisal of their suitability for future spatial planning policy. Against the background of the new constellations which have arisen with recent amendments to the Federal Regional Planning Act, the article concludes with a number of recommendations of possible ways of integrating the sustainable development strategy within the aims and instruments of spatial planning, thus contributing in turn to their future development.
