This paper focuses on the developm ent of graduate studies in land scaping at FAUUSP Initiated in the 1970's with the pioneering efforts of Miranda M. Magnoli, the area has grown to in corporate the work of other professors as well as of dozens of students conducting research on landscape and environment, and now, the area is a bout to be officially recognized. The methodological and conceptual aspects of the academic production of the unit are em phasized here, especially those which have contributed to the development of different approaches to Brazilian housing problems.
