La creación de la Biblioteca de Catalunya el año 1907, fue obra de la Diputación de Barcelona presidida por Enric Prat de la Riba, que respondía así a la demanda general —plasmada en el movimientoThe creation of the National Library of Catalonia in 1907 was due to the Diputació de Barcelona, presided over by Enric Prat de la Riba. It was a response to the call made by the noucentista movement for a library for advanced studies that would cater for the intellectual needs of university students, scholars and specialists in Catalan science and culture. Both the creation of the library and its subsequent development took place in a political and social context in which the Catalan language and culture played a major role. In this process of national construction, the recovery and promotion of the historical, documentary and bibliographic heritage were key elements. From the beginning, the aim of the National Library was to involve citizens in the creation of a repository for Catalan culture from all periods which, at the same time, would promote advanced study in all scientific areas. The National Library became a symbol of the recovery of Catalan culture and language; it was born with the support of the Catalan institutions, and it developed and consolidated itself to a large extent thanks to the enthusiastic participation of civil society.
