La participation environnementale à la française : le citoyen, l’État… et le sociologue
In this article the French experience regarding participative democracy in the environmental field is analysed. A reflexive approach confronts the sociological theories to the socio-historical “facts”. That is to say, the influence of the socio-historical context on the development of sociological theories, and reciprocally, is studied. Three historical periods are reviewed: (1) the modernistic consent/imposition (1950-1970), (2) the environmental opposition (1970-1990) and (3) the eco-citizen participation (since the 1990’s). These three periods are analysed, each in its turn, through the theoretical prism of (1) Bourdieu’s theories, (2) Touraine’s perspective and (3) Latour/Callon ‘s approach. The way these theories are influenced by the socio-historical context and influence it in return is emphasized. In other words, we analyse how reflexivity works in the field of the French sociology of the environment, regarding more precisely the participative issue. To conclude, the French case is confronted to other theoretical traditions from different European countries (mainly the U.K. and Germany).
