The article shows the development of the concept of cultural heritage in Brazil according with the thought of two important intelectuais who, in different m om ents, were engaged in preservation policies: Mário de Andrade and Aloísio Magalhães. The development of two public institutions responsible for that preservation is analized as well the ways in which their thoughts influenced the concept of cultural heritage and national memory
