A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

Is urban experimentation merely an isolated, one-off act with no future, or is it part of a process that develops over time? If so, how should we name this process? How can it be analysed? More generally, what does it tell us about urban governance systems? These are the main questions that prompted the writing of this article. Using the example of the Grenoble ‘laboratory’, we will look at situations where the involved parties are working to sustain, along two contrasting paths (the post-carbon city on the one hand and the city in transition on the other), professional cultures which, from one project to the next, have evolved from one-off experiments to the drafting of urban planning documents, from failure to success, and accumulated and combined, in a cumulative logic, knowledge, feedback and initiatives around ways of doing things, coordinating, formulating the problems to be solved and, ultimately, taking action. We propose to call this process ‘project lineage’. This proposed genealogical reading of the urban fabric aims to better understand how the same territory can provide the setting for the constitution, viability and dissemination of multiple, contradictory and sometimes even complementary experiments.
