“Republik oder Kalifat.” “Zwischen Demokratie und Gottesstaat”. These phrases are titles of two academic texts I came across recently. Both suggest that there is a conflict between democracy and religion, both give a sense that religion represents a threat for democracy, and both limit their analysis of contemporary religious phenomena to fundamentalism, more specifically to Islamist fundamentalism.
