A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Création de l’école régionale d’architecture de Toulouse : de l’art de bâtir à l’art du dessin (1903-1942)
With the creation of the “Écoles régionales d’architecture” under the architectural section of the École des Beaux-arts in Paris, was the democratization of the institutional training of architects in France, developed from 1903, done to the detriment of local particularisms ? While it had been solicited since 1904, Toulouse did not witness the opening of its École régionale d’architecture until 1940. Architectural training in Toulouse benefited from a pedagogy focused on the progressive acquisition of a professional competence, combining the refined art of composition and the trivial control of manufacturing. In Paris, on the other hand, assuming that one is or not born architect, the training was based on emulation, seeking to distinguish the best of a promotion rather than to ensure the professional competence of its students. Two postures difficult to reconcile until the creation of the Order of Architects forced Toulouse to surrender to Paris.
