A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Une période de discontinuité dans la vie d’Urbanistica : 1985-1990
Urbanistica is a prestigious Italian journal that can be considered a journal belonging to the professional sector, an academic journal, and a research journal, illustrating all the types outlined by the call for articles at the origin of this thematic dossier. More specifically, the journal has more or less approached each of these three types according to the successive changes and orientations of the directors and editorial committees. The journal’s history has been the subject of few studies that stop at the end of the 1970s. The successive periods have been less studied, but they represent an essential part of the more recent history of the journal. They make it possible to highlight the latter’s evolution about the structural dynamics which have meanwhile invested the field of town planning and urban studies. This article analyzes the experience initiated in 1985 when Bernardo Secchi became director of Urbanistica. During a brief period until 1990, the journal profoundly changed in terms of subjects covered, languages adopted, role and treatment of images, publisher, and, above all, the editorial board’s method of work and research. This exceptional phase can represent the reverse shot to consider the possible relationships between journals, research, and project practices.
