La nature contre la culture ?
In 2005, the entrepreneurs and authorities of the Port of Antwerp were forced to postpone a project to extend the port. The ecological association Natuurpunt responsible for this postponement was subsequently asked to join the governance process. For its part, the Doel 2020 Action Committee adopted a cultural approach to the polders and villages under threat. Whereas this vision – more in line with current socioeconomic issues – should have curried favour in the eyes of the port authorities, it was Natuurpunt which was instead designated as the unique contact partner. Relying on the systemic modelling of nature, the latter played an active role in establishing a political compromise. This reductionism nevertheless prevented it from discussing the validity of the objectives pursued in terms of their general interest and contributed to the “ordering” of people by eliminating the cultural and, consequently, the social dimension.
