The Art of Conversation: making sense of place
Inquiry into 'sense of place' is often described in terms of a 'conversation' with the site, a metaphor that suggests an exchange, a process of communication. This paper investigates the nature of this apparent dialogue by first tracing the idea of genius loci and then looking at how sense of place is constructed through physical experience of place, or by representation or reputation. In conclusion, it suggests that the communication metaphor is actually a means of shaping, and giving meaning to, the constantly changing world.
