Regeneration of damaged osteoporotic bone tissue with synthetic biomaterials
In some cases in oral and maxillofacial surgery, bone regeneration is required in large quantities. One of these cases is osteoporosis. This paper aims to show the new approach to solving this problem of impaired healing of bone defects in the jaw, as well as in other bones, with the use of synthetic biomaterials whose properties resemble the natural bone. Latest development in this area present an effort to create local drug-delivery systems for BMPs and growth factors, direct delivery of MSCs, as well as scaffolds for osteoconduction and also to utilize nanotechnology to synthesize composite biomaterials, predominantly based on HAp and polymers, that would mimic the natural bone nanocomposite architecture. There is also a tendency to create injectable biomaterials for simplified application.
