The Barrios Altos Recovery Project: towards a participatory approach of urban renewal.
The Barrios Altos neighborhood, in the Historic Center of Lima, has been a target of various urban renewal initiatives over the last years, which were left unfinished. The last one was the “Program for the Improvement of Habitability Conditions in Barrios Altos”, in 2014. The article takes this demonstrative case to analyze the role of community participation as key component in the process of city transformation, in the framework of a theoretical review and reflection about participatory management. Thus, a conceptual proposal about participatory urban renewal can be outlined.
