The paradigm of thinking the world in a fragmented way that permeates the modern sciences born in the 17th Century, especially from the first half of the 20th Century onward, is unsatisfactory to the understand complex phenomena – be them physical or social. An ecology of knowledge, as it is now being conceived, recognizes the multidimensionality of phenomena and the interconnection among systems, at the same time that it reaffirms both cultural and cognitive diversity as principles capable of surpassing the “monoculture of mind” and questioning the planet’s Westernization.
