Sobre la relación entre turismo y urbanización
This article theoretically investigates the relationship between tourism and urbanization based on a theoretical and methodological dialectic relationship between space and society. It discusses the process of production of space, establishing a conceptual framework based on the analysis of the relationship between space and social practices (economic, political, and cultural-ideological). It briefly presents the links between tourism and social practices in order to understand their manifestations, emphasizing their economic, political, and symbolic dimensions. The analysis of social practices of tourism supports the reflection about the production and consumption of space by and for tourism, identifying the specifics of the “tourist space.” Finally, it discusses the relationship between tourism and urbanization, pointing out the specifics of urban tourism in comparison with the process of urbanization related to industrialization, based on a review of approaches to the topic. The relevance of the article justifies the need to critically understand the processes that influence contemporary urban tourism urbanization, which indiscriminately impact different places and reproduces unequal urbanization.
