Urban space and social practices in Istanbul
(Urban) space is an (inter)cultural artefact. It inherently implies a plurality of different practices of dwelling, depending on specific sets of cultural and social values. To borrow an expression from Martin Heidegger, dwelling is the “goal” of building. The built environment constitutes the man-made settings for human activity. It includes dwelling places such as buildings and domestic shelters, but it also refers to infrastructures and to the general organization of space. The built environment is produced and consumed, in other words designed, constructed, managed and used, to let human beings live on earth and inhabiting the globe. Human beings have always built shelters for themselves, their gods, and even their dead. The practice of dwelling has bred complex forms of interaction, leading to “the crystallization of the city”.
