Urban Mobilization in the 1960s: Esat Neighbourhood as an Example of Urban Interior, Everyday Life and Structural Transformation
The study area of this paper, is Ankara where the urban and public space was built together after the proclamation of the Republic. The subject of the study is the transformation of urban mobility and social life in the urban planning strategies of Ankara in the 1960s. The mobilization of urban residents addressed to the vertical orientation of the city axis and centralized following the commercial references and infrastructure services in Ulus. Thus, within the scope of urban planning strategy, the ideological ‘spine’ formed, the urban areas where different income groups resided within the urban development axis towards the Çankaya direction. Cebeci, Maltepe and Esat Neighborhoods became the sub-center of the city with their commercial and residential multi-functional structure stock and as a branch of the political structuring with its production. The neighborhood of Esat might be considered as the interior space of the city as a generative environment for the experience of the public space in terms of the formation and transformation of everyday life. In this notion, spatial and vital provisions have developed and transformed in parallel to this structure. The neighborhood itself is a traditional settlement, which has been transformed by the urban rotation of socio-demographic characteristics. This transformation of spatial formations differs from the monumental typologies, as a new interface in the everyday life. The aim of the study is to give an alternative view to the history of the ordinary and the ordinary and to the city. The mixed method included the qualitative data research which are including the production, investigation and sharing of assorted materials. Via the oral history study the daily data transferring not included in the official ideological narrative became apparent. Also, technical inventory and individual photo archives were used. At the center of the study, urban and public spatial responses of everyday life reside.
