Neoclassical Architecture in Contemporary Architecture of Tehran
Persian Architecture witnessed drastic alterations due to increased interaction with the West since mid-Qajar period. Elements of European Classic Architecture were used in combination with Persian Architecture. In the early 20 the Century, AD at the onset of Pahlavi period, use of classic elements were favored both as a result of close political ties with Nazi Germany—whose social architectural style was neoclassical—as well as the tendency to revert to pre-Islamic Persian Sassanid and Achaemenid Architecture—which was also monumental in nature. In the 1960s and 1970s, this tendency was suppressed in favor of pure geometrical forms under the in3uence of Modern Architecture. Neoclassical architectural elements became fashionable in contemporary architecture of Tehran simultaneous with the advent of Postmodern Architecture. This paper 5rst reviews the theoretical bases of classic and neoclassic architecture in the West. Comparing this basis with how classical elements are employed in Persian Architecture of Tehran demonstrates that use of these elements were more a response o ‘fashion’ rather than being a knowledgeable choice.
