Posibilities of applying the thermoevolution method for the estimation of carbon content and structure in the materials
Determination of total carbon content in rock materials by the classical chemical analysis is difficult. Also, EDAX or WDX analyses do not permit to determine the content of carbon. Besides the determination of total carbon content, the knowledge of individual forms of carbon is of value in many analytical application fields. Such knowledge can be used, for example, to discern between various elemental carbon forms, on between free and bound carbon, to determine organic forms of carbon, etc. The analyzer LECO RC-412 (Corp, St. Joseph Michigan, USA) has been developed to fulfill the above mentioned requirements, which employs infrared spectrometry. Thermoevolution method is used as the principle of equipment operation which is based on the fact, that individual forms of carbon react with oxygen forming carbon oxides at different and quite specific temperature levels.LECO RC 412 is fastest and most efficient equipment for the qualitative and quantitative determination of various forms of carbon using infrared spectrometry.Simplest way of qualitative analysis is to use the single-phase temperature profile when the furnace is set to rise the temperature from 100 °C to 1000 °C with the rate of 20 °C per minute. It is used for the analysis of unknown sample with the various carbon content. This kind of analysis points out the temperatures at which the individual forms of carbon are released. After the forms of carbon were determined, it is possible to set the program for the quantitative analysis by selecting the proper time interval and temperature.
