The following notes are partial comments to two of the many issues considered by Gambino’s lecture: the knowledge mission of planning and the holistic approach. In particular, in the planning processes two knowledge types, analytical and normative, are identified and their contribution to the decision construction is briefly described. The fact that ‘landscape’ tends more and more to become ‘territory’, helps to clarify the relationship between knowledge and planning and the limits of an integrated approach.
