Composite dowels shear connectors for steel-concrete composite beams: a review
Abstract Composite dowels are shear connectors primarily used in steel-concrete composite beams for building and prefabricated composite bridge construction. This paper aims to investigate the current state-of-the-art and contribute to the development of the topic. The following contributions are derived from this review: the evolution of geometries, the structural behavior, the mechanical design models and the constructive dispositions of the composite dowels. The review focuses on the Puzzle-shape and Clothoidal-shape geometries, which are standardized by German technical approval Z-26.4-56, and on Crestbond. For the latter, an experimental database is also presented. From this literature review, it was possible to identify the main modes of failure of composite dowels under shear, as well as the most recent advances, particularly regarding the use of Puzzle and Clothoidal connectors under tension, shear-tension interaction and close to the concrete surface. At the end of the paper, challenges and gaps in knowledge are identified and future research directions are indicated.
