This article works from the postulate, often forgotten or reduced, that the patrimonial building of material elements as insubstantial ones, is not only linked to public policies. The process of patrimonialisation is also a phenomenon of society which makes sense collectively. Natural heritage depends also on cultural values. The analysis of three Pyrenean iconic places, based on the confrontation of various official documents with 95 visitors interviews, allows to analyse individuals perceptions of natural heritage to question official criteria of protection of natural heritage in France. If official criteria give a growing place to biodiversity, visitors perceptions are more interested in the aesthetic dimension of heritage and the intimate link between nature and individual at landscape scale.
