    This article deals with transformation on the urban structure of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region on the basic of demography density and family income data. Income evolved both upwards and downwards in the analyzed period, 1970- 1991. These dynamic feature suggest new interpretations of the socialeconomic phenomena, specially in regard to the usually accepted patterns of center-periphery relations
