A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Proximidad obligada y densificación no planificada en Bogotá
Suburban growth of contemporary cities, characterized by sprawl and low density, is possible thanks to the speed of modern transportation facilities. The case of Bogota constitutes an exception to this rule: it is not only one of the densest metropolises in the world, but also it recently tends to increase its compactness. Although various factors have influenced this evolution, the degradation of mobility conditions appears to be the one which has fostered this process. We analyze the different ways chosen by citizens to turn to proximity in order to circumvent the difficulties of insufficient mobility, reflecting on the lessons that this unique case could offer to other cities which may consider developing densification plans.
