This essay examines the interest of Antwerp’s elites in property investment and the behaviours put into effect during a period of major urban transformation. The nineteenth century began a period of strong demographic increases, which had significant repercussions on the price of property in the centre of the city. By reconstructing the property investments of the business elite, the author seeks to find out the extent to which it was responsible for the exploitation (for reasons of profit) of low-quality residential property within the city of Antwerp.
