Strategische Umweltprüfung (SUP) von Verkehrsplänen und -programmen
Following adoption in 2001 of the EU Directive on Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment (known as ‚'Strategic EIA’' or ‚'Plan EIA’'), from 2004 onwards a large number of both comprehensive and sectoral plans will be subject to additional environmental impact assessment. Strategic EIA introduces, among other things, new requirements with regard to the plan-preparation phase, public participation and monitoring. It applies to plans and programmes in the fields of comprehensive superordinate spatial planning, land-use planning, agriculture, tourism, forestry, fishery, energy, industry, waste-management, watermanagement, telecommunications and transport planning. This article sets out the main implications of the Directive for the transport sector.
