A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

As architects at the architecture firm “Trait Vivant”, which focuses on building with natural resources, the authors divide their time between design projects and teaching, leading them to a fundamental question : To what extent does the architect influence today’s mainstream society through their oeuvre ? Considering that the building sector has become today’s most energy-consuming industry, producing about three quarters of all industrial waste, architects have thus adopted a key role in the social transition towards a sustainable way of life. Through a discussion of several projects carried out by Trait Vivant using almost exclusively renewable or naturally geo-sourced materials, this paper addresses the possibility of spreading new building techniques through teachings and construction workshops with student architects or engineers. Examining a variety of projects, most of which are linked to straw-bale-construction, the authors posit that ecology as an isolated abstract concept isn’t viable, and can only be grasped when related to a practical issue. It is now widely understood that the conventional construction sector’s principles must drastically change in order to ensure sustainable practices. The very first condition for this is thus the introduction of alternative theoretical and practical techniques in architecture schools. The authors highlight the demand amongst younger generations to be taught the use of natural materials, testifying that disillusioned students are the most committed participants on organized worksites. This can be observed, for instance, in the case of a pedagogical worksite where an eight story apartment building in Paris was insulated using straw-bales. In this regard, the sensory qualities of the materials used during the project, as well as the civic intensity summoned throughout the work, are bearers of hope. The paper aims, on the one hand, to be a cause of thought for the readers, but also seeks to sketch a holistic vision of a possible future for our construction culture, which should nowadays be focused upon materials like straw, wood and soil.
