A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Chandigarh la Main ouverte : d’un urbanisme de plan à un urbanisme de vie
As a counterpoint to interpretations assimilating Chandigarh to the excesses of modern planning, this study questions the relationships that the city's designers maintained with Indian civilization as well as the roles played by some inhabitants’ appropriations in the inflection of the initial urban project. The hypothesis is that the urban plan of the new capital of Punjab drawn by Le Corbusier and his associates demonstrated malleability over time and showed itself to be more likely than expected capable of assimilating the daily or occasional practices of its inhabitants. The active engagement of residents sheds new light on the modernity of Chandigarh. It allows to bring nuances to analysis that characterize this urban project as relating to principles exogenous to indian culture.
