A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
De quoi la « ville inclusive » est-elle le nom ? Exploration d’un concept émergent à partir de discours scientifiques et opérationnels
In this article, we investigate the various and unstable meanings of the notion of “inclusive city”, which seems to be increasingly used among urban professionals. We look at how this expression is gaining growing legitimacy and explore its theoretical content. Although we did not lead an extensive enquiry, we show that this expression spreads more as a slogan, a management tool and a way to rationalize urban projects than a proper scientific concept. The “inclusive city”, behind an apparent form of consensus, seems to euphemize processes of social domination within the city. It offers a vision of habitat centered on individual desires. We also point out sociological issues on where researchers and urban actors stand in this context. In this perspective, various social and professional backgrounds reveal different approaches on how to think and how to act on cities.
