L'industrie céramique française et le marché argentin : des échanges commerciaux aux transferts techniques
Beginning in the eighteenth century, French manufacturers of ceramic products were largely present in the Argentinian market. In the nineteenth century, as Buenos Aires experienced high levels of urban growth, Argentinian developers relied ever more heavily on French construction materials to compensate for the dearth of local production. Until 1914, French tiles were exported across the Atlantic in large quantities. In the wake of World War I, however, the consolidation of the Argentinian ceramics industry, as well as competition from other exporting countries, led to a decline in the importation of French ceramic products to Argentina. Instead, opportunities arose for French technicians and ceramicists, whose expertise was often sought by Argentinian industrials eager to develop national production. This article investigates the way in which the commercial sector—that of ceramic products—favored the transfer of technology between France and Argentina, even as the quantity of French exports to Argentina diminished in the inter-war period.
